Clone Wars Explained!
Published: November 19, 2008
Today's Flashback takes us all the way back to December 1980. The Empire Strikes Back was only out for 6 months at the time. People were jazzed about the film but really starting to speculate about the next one and where the whole series was going. There were always conflicting reports in the media about how many episodes there might be and when they would be made, if ever.
In December 1980, Fantastic Films magazine put out a Special Collectors Edition (#20) with a newspaper-like cover which read in bold lettering CLONE WARS EXPLAINED. The article inside was written by a fellow named Bill Hayes (and it's clearly labeled as "speculation"). A rather humorous blurb on the front cover, accompanied by a photo of Luke dueling Vader, reads: DARK LORD DECEIVES "SON" WITH HALF-TRUE REVELATION - Lord Vader, in an Imperial subspace broadcast, revealed today that he informed Rebel leader Luke Skywalker as to his progeny. The dumbfounded Skywalker lost his head (figuratively) and his hand (literally) when he learned that he may well be third in line for the Monarchy.
Pretty funny stuff! It also alludes to the beliefs held by some at the time Vader's telling Luke he was his father was just a lie. It turned out to be true, of course, but you have to remember that at the time, many people thought it could be a lie.
Inside this long article loaded with photos and some fun artwork, you'll find endless speculation. Some of it is quite ridiculous (Vader and Obi-Wan are clones, Boba Fett is Luke's real father, etc.) but I think you'll find a few surprising bits that turned out to be true.
Hays predicts that who turns out to be young Anakin is originally a slave boy in Episode I. Of course the context is a little off but the prediction about slavery did turn out to be true. He mentions a collar around the boy's neck that keeps him obedient. There was a deleted scene from Episode I where a device that's implanted inside Anakin is removed before he leaves Tatooine - a similar notion. He also talks about The Force being tied in with DNA - sort of a precursor to midichlorians.
Hey look, if you throw enough stuff at the wall, eventually something's gonna stick - know what I mean?
In any case, this little gem of an article is a fun read and a great candidate for a fun FLASHBACK, so enjoy it.
