It appears Lucas was interested in reducing the violent shots of people actually getting hit with laser bolts. I found this clip to be interesting because not only do we get a few milliseconds of cut footage restored, but it's interesting to see the great lengths Lucas went to in order to change these very minute details. He had to have gone back to the original master and re-edited the whole sequence very carefully.
