George Lucas never was really happy with the way Mos Eisley was presented in A NEW HOPE. The biggest piece of evidence to support this is the fact that he refined many of the establishing shots of the bustling city using computer graphics for the Special Edition release of the film. The scene was slightly extended and the journey through the city seems much longer than in the original cut. After Ben's Jedi Mind Trick in what's known as the "Lost Cut" of A NEW HOPE (an early rough assembly of the film), we see Luke's landspeeder make its way from where the stormtroopers are standing to the front door of the cantina in one long shot. In the final version, however, there were other shots intercut with the existing single take to give the illusion of a greater distance from Point A to Point B. The Special Edition, of course, rendered this useless but the cutaways served their purpose at the time. The stills below are from the Star Wars Insider and my good friend Holger Bertsch.
