In the famous "Lost Cut" of A NEW HOPE (as featured in the Star Wars Insider Issue 41) and on the Behind the Magic CD-ROM you can see a whole different edit of the cantina scene. George Lucas was unhappy with the first cantina shoot and eventually had some new creatures made, rebuilt the set and reshot it a second time but without the principle actors. You can see a few aliens in this cut that didn't make it into the final edit plus lots of other little details. Grab the Behind the Magic CD-ROM and watch this scene a few times. It's really something and you might find a few surprises. One of the bigger surprises is that Han hangs out with and kisses a girl known only as "Jenny." She was totally removed from the final version, as you know. What a stud. When Obi-Wan has his confrontation with Ponda Baba and Dr. Evazan, there is a different arm on the ground and if you keep up on your trivia, you'll notice that this arm is the real arm of Ponda Baba (Walrus-man) and not that hairy one we saw in the final version. Ponda Baba had those cup-like hands which you can see clearly in the book Star Wars Chronicles. There's an image below as well. Some of the Greedo shots were filmed again with actress Maria DeAragon, especially the ones with Greedo sitting at the table with Han Solo. Oh, and don't forget to listen closely for alternate dialogue and original voices, like the cockney voice of the bartender. If you can't find the CD-ROM, the video below contains the entire scene. I'm also throwing in a quickie of the droids entering the cantina from an alternate angle from one of the documentaries. Thanks to Dylan McDermond for sending these clips in.
