I've always had an affinity for this particular picture of Biggs and Luke because I always attribute it to my very first experience with a deleted scene from a film. This picture is what sparked my fascination with deleted scenes. I distinctly remember opening up the storybook in 1978 or so and saying to myself, "Hey! That wasn't in the movie!" and being completely confused for the next several years of my life as to why this stuff was in the books, on the trading cards, and basically everywhere but the actual movie itself! The image of Luke and Biggs you see below is a good one, but neither shots pictured here is "exactly" from the Luke/Biggs scene found on the Behind the Magic CD-ROM. It's a very old picture from the original Star Wars Storybook. The small inset photo in the bottom right corner may look a little familiar to you. Check out the clips from the CD-ROM to see what I mean. Both pictures are from what I'd call alternate takes of the same scene. You can tell from the placement of the buildings and the positions of the actors that these pictures are not from the version included on the CD-ROM. Slight differences, but differences nonetheless. If you carefully compare these pictures below to the video on the Behind the Magic CD-ROM, you should see these slight differences. As for why the Biggs scenes were deleted from the film in the first place, your answer lies in the book Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays by Laurent Bouzereau. George Lucas explains the reasons he deleted the Biggs/Luke scenes from the first reel of A NEW HOPE: "So I did it. I wrote it, and I shot it, and I looked at it. It worked OK, but it wasn't great. I could not get out of my mind that poetically speaking I really wanted to have this clean line of the robots taking you to Luke, Luke taking you to Ben, Ben taking you to Han, Han taking you to Princess Leia. I wanted each character to take you to the next person." He goes on to say: "So I just decided to trust my heart, and I structured the story that way because of the way I felt about it, not because it was logical."
