The Sail Barge By T-bone Published: January 23, 2005 Updated: October 29, 2006 PrintEmailDiscuss
Jabba's barge was akin to a big pirate ship with the only thing missing being a rousing chorus of, "Yo, Ho, Ho, and a Bottle of Rum!"
There were many shots from Jabba's Sail Barge that were not seen in the final version of the film for a variety of reasons. Some of it was probably just coverage or B-Roll (extra stuff to fill in more important shots and to use for cutaways). It was assumed that the trip to the Sarlacc pit was pretty much just a continuation of the usual party at the palace, hence the drinking and partying.
It's interesting to note, although it's more of a change than a deleted scene, that for the Special Editions, when Han is hanging off the skiff and Chewie is grabbing his boots to hold on to him, Lucasfilm added some CG ropes around the boots. In the original shot those weren't there and it looked like Han was magically hanging on by his toes or something. The ropes make more sense at least. It's those subtle changes to the Special Editions that I like the best.
I came across some interesting storyboard sketches on the Propstore of London while browsing around. Some of them had some cut scene minutae that folks like us enjoy immensely. The images are included below. Some interesting things to note are some of the alternate dialogue written on the sides of the sketches (I'm not sure if those are just paraphrases or meant to be actual lines spoken on set), Jabba giving the Roman-style thumbs down, Jabba's throne floating towards the camera, Jabba's tail knocking glasses over, a strange moment where Boba Fett monitors 3PO and R2, and the "tentacle" that snaps as Luke and Leia land on the skiff. I can't be sure but it looks like it breaks as a result of the skiff moving as opposed to Han shooting it. It's unclear from the images.
Most of the other pictures you see here are just from small shots consisting mostly of aliens and alternate takes of scenes from different angles.
