Tony Dyson

Remembering Tony Dyson

I was very saddened to read that a very old friend of the site, Tony Dyson, had passed away. Tony was the robot engineer who created the many R2-D2 units for The Empire Strikes Back. He also worked on other films like Moonraker, Superman II, and Dragonslayer.

It may be hard to believe now, but back when the internet was young, there weren’t many Star Wars websites out there. Lucasfilm itself didn’t even have a web presence. For a short time, fan sites like this one were the only source of Star Wars information out there. So when I started up this site in 1996, it wasn’t long before e-mails began to come in from all sorts of people. One of those people was Tony Dyson, a man I’d never heard of. He told me he was the guy who made the R2-D2 units for Lucasfilm when they made The Empire Strikes Back.  He had pictures and seemed genuinely happy to share them and his information. He said he’d be more than willing to do an interview for the site, which he enjoyed. His interview became my first “official” Star Wars related interview, which is why his passing hits home a bit for me. (more…)

A Droid For Each NFL Team

Super Bowl 50 is going to kick off this Sunday with the Carolina Panthers meeting the Denver Broncos.

What does this have to do with Star Wars you may ask?  Absolutely nothing.  SO… I decided to take matters into my own hands and make sure all the Star Wars fans, that happen to also be football fans, had something a little extra this weekend.  Inspired by the colors of the NFL, I’ve created a little gallery of mascots, if you will, to represent all the teams in the league using the Hasbro and Disney Droid Factory pieces.

A Long Time Ago…Exploring the Star Wars Cinematic Universe

As some of you know, this site was launched in 1996. That means it’s been alive for 20 years; a pretty big accomplishment. In that time, I’ve written in my bloggy, informal style here on the site, with the occasional magazine article or sidebar here or there. It gives me great pleasure to announce today that the wonderful Sequart organization has released the first in a trilogy of Star Wars books called A Long Time Ago… Exploring the Star Wars Cinematic Universe. Inside, you’ll be treated to some great writing by some well-respected writers, one of them being me! (more…)

Star Wars Spoofed As Disney Musical

Star Wars Musical is a fan film that spoofs Star Wars as a Disney Musical, colliding two of the galaxy’s biggest fandoms. Having completed the first episode which recently won the Best Short Film award at Stan Lee’s Comikaze GeekFest Film Festival, the team behind this mashup is crowdfunding their next episode and are excited to be chosen to be a part of Rockethub and Ovation TV’s Creative Studio, where they compete for a chance to be featured on TV and win $5000 towards funding the project.

Magazine Mania! (Updated)

As we get closer to the release of The Force Awakens, the marketing machine will steadily increase its output and you’ll see more and more Star Wars branded everything no matter where you go. Marketing has always been integral since the saga’s inception. No one really knew if the first film would be successful in 1977. Marketing efforts helped familiarize people with the foreign aspects of this new form of science fiction/space fantasy. (more…)

Star Cars!

Picture the scene – it’s 2016, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a smash hit at the box office, and the film’s characters past and present have a bit of cash burning holes in their space pockets. Naturally, they’ve come to Earth with one thing in mind – to source some new cars to take back to their galaxy and show off to their friends.

But what earthly cars would they choose? And what modifications would they make to add their own personal touches? And why didn’t we put Yoda in a Skoda? Read on to find out…

Why I’m Worried About The Force Awakens

Before you read this, understand one thing.

THERE MAY BE SERIOUS SPOILERS in this piece. POSSIBLE, but SERIOUS SPOILERS.

I will be openly referring to things that might actually happen in the film.

Run away now if you don’t want to know what MIGHT happen in The Force Awakens based on internet rumors and such.

A lot of this is probably incorrect and based on rumor, so don’t get too upset with me or the film until you actually see it.

Last Warning…
