Make Your Own...Twin Pod Cloud Car

The Bespin bi-pod cloud car has a sleek and beautiful design, and its color brings a nice contrast into the collection of gray and white spaceship models. This craft reflects the classic Bespin feeling I remember after seeing The Empire Strikes Back for the first time back in 1980.

My model is vacuum-formed from styrene sheets. (The method is the same as described in several other projects and in the vacuum-forming article).

I made just one vacuum-plug for the body. The same shape is used for both the upper and lower half, which is the same for both sides of the ship. Separate plugs were made for the cockpit hood, the cockpit section, the landing gear dome under the ship and the engine housing. The engine bridge between the pods were made from plywood and laminated with sheet styrene. Most of the details were kitbashed from truck kits.

The pilots were made from Super Sculpey. Their names are Lasse and Lars.

Super sculpey stays soft until it is baked in the oven.

The model was constructed in several parts before it was assembled.

I scribed the panel lines into the plastic with a sharpened screwdriver. This method is described in the article covering the making of Vader’s custom TIE fighter.

The model was painted in Humbrol enamels.

Remember to use a breathing mask when using an airbrush.

The finished model was mounted on an acrylic rod.
